The Skinny on Fat- Omega 3s and Fitness

Did you know not all fat is bad for you?

Personal trainers, world class athletes, and nutritionists alike know that a certain type of fat is actually good for you.

They’re called Omega 3 Fatty Acids. This naturally occurring type of fat is found in avocados, walnuts, flax seeds, and  fish, amongst other whole foods. The two main types of this fat are EPA and DHA.

Omega 3 fats are great for the brain and the heart, providing you with the right type of cholesterol (the good kind).

Why are omega 3 fats good for fitness training and bodybuilding?

Omega 3 fats have been shown to increase blood flow during workouts and can decrease post-workout muscle soreness by up to 35%. Omega 3 fats decrease swelling and quicken the muscle repair process.

Omega 3s also increase your body’s insulin sensitivity, making it easier for your muscles to burn fat, rather than store it.

 Healthy fats are a great way to fuel your workout  whether it consists of cardio or weight training.

Bodybuilders, indoor cycling buffs, and yoga/pilates fans will all benefit  from an increase in omega 3 fats.

 Sadly, most people are omega 3-deficient. Why?

In traditional times people ate more unprocessed plant-based fats. In addition, most animals (cows, sheep, goats, chickens etc.) fed on natural grass and herbs €”or small animals that were doing so. Salmon get their omega 3s from smaller algae-eating fish.

The introduction of simple animal feed derived from nutrient-lacking corn or soy actually changed the fat content of many foods we eat.

How to increase omega 3’s in your diet for enhanced fitness and bodybuilding training/recovery.

Various omega 3 supplements are on the market these days. Most are derived from fish oils, but you can also find vegetarian DHA and EPA supplements made from flax seed oil or algae.

Make sure to up your intake of avocados, walnuts, flax seeds, and blueberries. Try to go for wild salmon, cold-water fish, or grass-fed varieties of meat. You can also get omega 3-fortified eggs at most markets these days that come from.
